The Shamisen is a musical instrument originating in Okinawa.
It is a banjo-like three-stringed instrument that is played with a plectrum. It consists of a long neck (Sao), and it is made of quince wood (Karin) and of cats and dogs skins.
The Geisha plays the Shamisen kneeled on a zabuton (a kind of pillow).
It became the favorite Geisha’s musical instrument.
